From 2008 Nielsen – with the VIDEO CONSENSUS programme – began monitoring OnLine content and especially videos, including those that are embedded, downloaded, transformed, and re-uploaded.

Data provided by Video Census refers to American users, but provides an index of the increase in the presence of videos on the Net.   The report released in August 2009 shows how, compared to the preceeding year, video-viewing OnLine had increased by 41 per cent.

The Web calls the Video

The Video is the new frontier of the Web, these days much-used to enrich corporate websites, or to exploit the buzz effect on outlets such as YouTube and the new Social Networking sites. A video must also be SIMPLE:  to present a new product it is not necessary to create a sophisticated film costing huge sums. It’s enough to have a camera and a good speaker in order to produce a direct message in a few minutes that is functional for OnLine use.

Bear in mind that OnLine videos are viewed on small screens in low resolution, with mono sound.  There is no need for lighting, makeup, or recording studios.  Also, messages on the Web need to be frequently renewed so it is important to concentrate on regular updates, rather than on the technical quality of a single video, the  life cycle of which is decidedly brief.
